– Murder, robbery down, crime decrease by 41%
The police in B Division (Berbice) led by Assistant Commissioner Lyndon Alves are boasting of tremendous success in their fight against crime and other social ills affecting society at large.
Alves, in company of other senior officers of the division including Deputy Commander Superintendent Wayne De Harte spoke to the media recently in his office at the B Division Headquarters at Strand and Coburg (Forbes Burnham) Street, in New Amsterdam Berbice.
There were significant reductions for most of the offences for 2018 compared with figures for 2017 with a 41% decreased in serious crimes for the period January to May 2018 in comparison to 2017. While there was a decrease in the number of cases for 2018 there was a 65% clear up rate in comparison to 44% for 2017.
The figures released showed that there has been a 55% decrease in the number of murders from nine to four. There were two robberies for the period under review for 2017 as against one so far for 2018.
In fact, there were increases in only two crimes. There were 176 cases of rape for last year. The number increased to 26 for 2018 while Robbery under arms where a gun was used, stood at 13 in 2017. This year the figure stands at 15.
For the offence of Robbery under Arms using other implement the figure dipped from 12 to four, Robbery with Violence declined from nine to five. Break and enter and larceny had the biggest decrease—- 64%. While there were 84 for the same period in 2017, the figure reduced drastically to 30 this year.
Larceny from the person also showed significant decrease with a 60% drop in the crime from five to two.
Burglary stood at seven for last year as against six this year. There has been no case of kidnapping and robbery with aggravation
According to Commander Alves the reduction in crime has been attributed to the hard work of his ranks and cooperation from members of the public. He was loud in praise for the support that he and his ranks have been receiving from the members of the public.
The timely information and feedback have enabled them to intercept or thwart many misdemeanors by unsavory characters.
Alves credited this to their increase vehicular patrol, and increase in numbers. He also mentioned the increase confidence that the members of the public including the business community has with the Police Force.
There have been increased patrols using vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and foot. There were also roadblocks throughout the county. The police maintained a permanent presence at the Berbice River Bridge junction.
