A 17-year-old resident of Howes Street, Charlestown, was yesterday remanded to prison on two gun-related charges.
Colin Denny, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he denied the two charges after they were read to him.
The first charge alleged that on June 14 at Howes Street, Charlestown, he had a live round of .32 ammunition in his possession without being a licensed firearm holder.
It was further alleged that on same day in question and at the same location, he had in his possession a .32 pistol without being a licensed firearm holder.
Attorney-at-Law Keisha Chase in an application to secure bail for her client told the court that her client had no knowledge and control of the firearm.
The lawyer went on to tell the court that on the day in question, her client and six other individuals were walking in Albouystown on his way to visit his grandmother when they were confronted by a party of police officers.
She added that the other individuals upon seeing the police officers fled the scene, and her client was detained.
However, Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield’s facts were different from that of the defence counsel.
The court heard that June 13 last, police on mobile patrol observed Denny acting in a suspicious manner. A search was then conducted on him and in his crotch an unlicensed .32 pistol and a live round was discovered.
Denny was then asked if he was the owner of a firearm licence and he remained silent. Hence, he was arrested and taken to the station.
The Magistrate, after listening to the Prosecutor’s submission, remanded Denny. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on July 4, when he will appear before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman, for the commencement of his trial.
