Two of the three bandits who were nabbed Wednesday in a Grove, East Bank Demerara supermarket have criminal records which go back at least four years.
Police have identified the suspects as Ryan Bannister, 27, of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara; Roy Smith, 33, of Herstelling Sea dam, East Bank Demerara and Jerrold Da Silva, 45, of Coverden, East Bank Demerara.
They are due to appear in court today.
Bannister and Da Silva were among four men who were arrested in June, 2015, following two separate robberies on the West Coast of Demerara.
It was alleged that two men invaded the home of 54-year-old Wazim Khan of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara. They allegedly held him at gunpoint before escaping with a mobile phone and video camera.
They reportedly then held up Rasheed Ramesh of Hague Backdam at gunpoint and robbed him of a pedal cycle. However, police, with the aid of residents, captured Bannister and DaSilva.
Police recovered an unlicensed revolver and the stolen bicycle.
Bannister was out on bail in connection with a June 2016 armed robbery at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
The robbery was committed by three men who, while armed with a handgun and cutlasses, invaded a home and tied up a woman and her two daughters.
The suspects escaped with cash and jewellery.
Bannister was among several Lusignan Prison inmates who were wounded in August 2017, during an attempt on the life of a prisoner accused of being an informant.
At around 04.00 hrs on Wednesday last, Bannister, Smith, and Da Silva allegedly broke into the Number One Supermarket at Lot 18 Grove Public Road, after tying up the on-duty guard. They then placed him in a bathroom at the back of the building before proceeding to the top of the three-storey premises, via the back steps.
However, the 53-year-old guard managed to untie his bonds and alert residents, who summoned ranks from the Grove Police Station.
On arriving, the ranks realised that the intruders were still inside. They called for backup and more ranks arrived and surrounded the building.
After a 45-minute standoff, the bandits surrendered and were detained.
Police said that a .38 revolver with six live matching rounds as well as a quantity of phone cards and a sum of cash were recovered from the suspects.
