Police are investigating the cause of death of a known bandit whose badly decomposed body was found in an abandoned house at Savannah Park K Housing Scheme in New Amsterdam, Berbice. The discovery was made around midday on Wednesday. The man, Leroy Hopkinson, was last seen alive on Saturday.
The body was found lying face down in the unfurnished living room of a one-flat building where he had moved in some months ago.
According to residents they were bothered by a strong stench in the area. They first thought it was that of an animal.
On Wednesday morning, the stench became unbearable, and as such neighbours decided to make checks and noticed that the stench was emanating from the abandoned house. Upon checking they made the discovery of the badly decomposed body of the man.
A report was made at the Central Police Station and ranks visited the scene.
Due to the advanced state of decomposition, the body was not stored at any funeral parlour or the Hospital Mortuary. It was placed in a box and taken to the Stanleytown Cemetery, where a Post Mortem Examination is expected to be conducted shortly.
According to the police, Hopkinson was a specialist in break and enter and larceny offences. During July 2015 at Main and Pope Streets, New Amsterdam, Hopkinson and others, armed with guns, robbed Nazmoon Ali called “Data” of $380,000 in cash, $150,000 worth in cell phone cards and one gold chain valued at $100,000.
They were also charged with robbing Feroze Sammy Ali of one 9mm. semi-automatic pistol, 17 live rounds.
During 2014 whilst employed as a garbage collector at the Mayor and Town Council, Hopkinson robbed his colleague Barbara Ramdeo of $37,000 which represented a ‘box hand’ the woman had received from other employees for the week.
The woman had just collected the money and was on her way home when she was accosted by the accused in a lonely area. Her screams attracted persons in the vicinity who responded to her plea for help and saw the accused fleeing. He was pursued and in an attempt to make good his escape, he jumped into a trench. He was retrieved from the trench and given a sound thrashing until he was saved by the police. The money was found in his pocket.
