DEAR EDITOR,
Permit me to shed or spread some light in response to the concerns expressed by Shaline Singh Kaieteur News, June 13, — “An untenable nursing situation”.
However, before the hand reaches for the holster, allow me to state that my input is in no way intended to be viewed as a dismissal or belittling of the issue at hand, but rather one of enlightenment, from a health care administrative professional with four decades-plus experience, spanning three major countries, and a secondary school teacher with the same time period of experience, both occupations concomitantly held.
In like manner as the questions posed by the complainant, answers to the following questions are being elicited—sought:
When the Nurse Midwife was appointed Ward Sister, was the available position specifically for Night Duty, or was this position created to accommodate her and her extra employment during the day? Were there any other applicants (not citizens) affected by this appointment decision? If so, were any complaints voiced? If not, Why?
A probationary period usually follows administrative appointments, thereby allowing employer and employee to see if they are a good fit, and to facilitate matters if a termination is indicated.
Are the two areas of employment inter-related? Are the day job and the night job for the same employer? What is her employee status at the National Insurance Scheme?
Regarding working extended hours, the Labour Law is very clear as to the sequelae and accompanying hazards, especially as it pertains to nurses and the working environment. Have there been any reports of mal-performance on the part of this staffer, bearing in mind that she is only working her expected hours of duty at West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) — Region #3? The extended working hours involve another working milieu.
On the issue of assumption, I am certain that the complainants are aware of what assumptions are capable of doing. Basically they are dangerous things to make, foolish acts in the absence of all the facts. Was there any time spared in endeavouring to elicit information as to whether or not there is documented evidence of this Ward Sister sleeping on duty. From the time of her appointment to current date, has her job performance met stated expectations? What say her employers? What say her working colleagues, those who fall under her leadership?
It would be of interest to note where this inquiry eventually leads or whose ox it gores, as the complaint is blatantly void of substantive facts. It however appears to be replete with serious issues reposing under those actually brought to the fore.
