Evolution Cycle Club’s Paul De Nobrega, Briton John (United We Stand CC), Junior Niles (Team Coco’s), Gordon Spencer (Evolution CC) and Trojan CC’s Shenika Teixeira came out as the respective senior, junior, veterans under & over-45and female winner when the Third edition of the Albert Rose Memorial 60-mile Cycle Road Race was contested in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden on Sunday last.
De Nobrega who sprinted away with three primes, crossed the finish line in a time of 2:43:37 to win the contest from Jamal John, Cortis Dey, Briton John, Junior Niles and Silvio Inniss who capped off the top six positions. Deeraj Garbarran also won three primes with Rastaf O’Selmo copping two.
The starting and finish line was outside Gregory Variety Store, Republic Avenue. Competitors traversed all the way to Moblissa Hill on the Linden Soesdyke Highway and repeated this course for three times.
John was followed to the line on the junior clash by Adealie Hodge and Ajay Gopilall. Niles won his segment of the race from Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay and Jaikarran Sookhai, while Spencer got the better of Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson and Garfield Lorimer.
On the distaff side, Teixeira was the best with the 2nd and 3rd places occupied by Abigale Jeffery and Cliveica Spencer. There was also a number of BMX races and the results are as follows:
BMX 12-14 – 1st Jaheme Henry, 2nd Shaquille Dow, 3rd Mark Lewis. BMX 6-9 – 1st Jhai Lewis, 2nd Javin Henry. BMX 9-12 -1st Shaquelle Dow, 2nd Jaheme Henry, 3rd Mark Lewis.
The event was held in memory of former Linden and Guyana cyclist Mr. Albert Rose who made his name in the 70’s and 80’s; he was also the Founder and President of Hurricane Cycle and Athletic Club which was founded in 1988. The passionate sports lover was also integrally involved in the birth of Topp XX FC which became one of the nation’s best exponents of ball weaving.
Other sponsors that contributed towards the success of the event were Clear Waters, Bernard’s Variety Store, Mc Rae’s Supermarket, Cody Taxi Service, Foreign Links, Semple and Sons and the Anthony family.
