Despite serious objections to bail by the Court Prosecutor, Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman, yesterday granted a taxi driver bail in the sum of $107,000 after he allegedly beat the mother of his two daughters.
The man, 30-year-old Clarence Barkoye was yesterday granted bail on malicious wounding and disorderly behaviour charges.
Barkoye, of 209 Lamaha Street, Newtown, Georgetown denied both allegations after they were read to him by the Magistrate.
The Court heard that on June 7, at Lamaha Street, Newtown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Neeto Latchman.
It was further alleged that on June 8, last, at the Kitty Police Station, he behaved in a disorderly behaviour.
According to the prosecutor on June 7, last, the victim and the defendant got into an argument and he armed himself with a piece of pipe and dealt her several lashes to her hands and about her body.
As a result of the blow, the victim received injuries to both hands and a finger.
The prosecutor objected to bail being granted based on the severity of the defendant’s actions, adding that, the defendant is in the habit of hitting the woman whenever he is in a bad mood.
Despite the prosecutor’s objection, Magistrate Latchman released the defendant on a total of $107,000 bail.
He was instructed to make his next court appearance on June 15.
