A labourer, who recently posted on his Facebook account that Essequibo belongs to Venezuela and that he will bomb all the stores in Guyana, was yesterday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan who cited public safety.
Twenty-three-year-old Shiam Wazir Nazir, of Parika Backdam, East Bank Essequibo, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts late yesterday afternoon, where a charge of inciting public terror was read to him.
The allegation against Nazir stated that between June 1 and June 3 at Parika, East Bank Essequibo, with intent to cause public terror, he wrote on his Facebook post that Essequibo belongs to Venezuela and that he will bomb all the stores in Guyana one by one.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield strongly objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the seriousness of allegation. The prosecutor further submitted that should bail be granted, the defendant would not return to court for the trial.
The Chief Magistrate after listening to the prosecutor remanded the defendant to prison until June 26, when he will appear at the Leonora Magistrates’ Courts.
