It was a tough battle to fight for 15-year-old, Rose Hall Town youth, Beyonce Ross, the teen who made the news after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She lost the fight to stay alive yesterday. She took her last breath around 2:30 am at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Ross was on life support after going brain dead a few days ago but her mother, siblings, relatives and friends were hoping for a miracle that would have her regain consciousness.
Her mother, Yonnette Clarke, was inconsolable after she received the news of Beyonce’s demise. She could not say much but a relative told this publication that they are still in shock even though the chances were slim.
The woman said that Ross and her mother shared a tight knitted relationship since it was her only daughter among her four sons.
“They use to tell each other everything and they always had laughter in their conversations. They were very close so it is very hard on her (Clarke) because it’s as if she lost her best friend,” the relative stated.
Clarke received a call yesterday morning from GPHC informing her that her daughter had died. They last saw her during visiting hours between 4:00-6:00 Sunday.
Meanwhile, Minister of Social Cohesion George Norton extended his condolences to the family and stated that “Ross’ death is a tremendous loss to the cycling fraternity” and that she would have been among the top sportswomen in the country.
On Monday May 28, the biopsy results for Ross returned and revealed that the brain tumor was not cancerous. This gave the teen’s mother hope that her daughter would make it and return to normalcy with time.
However, two days later Ross became brain dead and had to be rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. She was transferred subsequently to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she remained until she eventually succumbed.
Ross began experiencing headaches in February. When her condition seemed serious, her mother took her to the Port Mourant and New Amsterdam Hospitals respectively. Her condition worsened and she was then taken to a private doctor in the city.
An MRI scan was recommended by the doctor and the results of the test were not what they were expecting.
It revealed that young Ross had a developing tumor in her brain that could possibly be malignant (cancerous). They could not know until the result of the biopsy, which was done on Wednesday by a doctor visiting from Jamaica.
Clarke explained that the MRI scan had revealed that the tumor was situated in the centre of the brain and there was excessive fluid retention. They were referred to the leading Neurosurgeon in the country Dr. Amarnauth Dukhi.
The three-time junior gold medalist underwent her first surgery on April 13, 2018 at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
