In yesterday’s coverage of the UCCA Awards Ceremony it was mistakenly stated that Chimwala Munilall was inducted into the UCCA’ Hall of Fame along with Sydney Jackman and Imran Jafferali when in fact it was the late Sonny Moonsammy who was inducted instead of Munilall.
Moonsammy was born on June2, 1929 in Skeldon, Berbice and died at age 34 in December 1963 following a Motor Lorry accident in Lombard Street Georgetown.
The Right-hand batsman represented British Guiana twice in first class cricket, in Barbados in 1959, as a 29 year-old because Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher and Joe Solomon were on tour in India.
Moonsammy, the first player from the Upper Corentyne to play First-Class cricket, was an outstanding fielder and first played for Berbice in 1952, British Guiana Indians in 1954-1958 and British Guiana 1959.
With cricket failing to harness his youthful energy, Moonsammy started a lumber business in Skeldon and after his two belated appearances for his Country in 1959 he disappeared from the game altogether. Kaieteur News apologises for the mistake.
