It appears that alert security at the Lusignan Prison, East Cost Demerara, has foiled a major smuggling attempt.
According to the police, yesterday, the incident occurred shortly after midnight.
The police said that about 01:00hrs, alert police and prison personnel manning the eastern towers of the Lusignan Prison, heard “crashing sounds” coming from the bushes.
They then saw a male, wearing a ‘hoodie’, coming out from the bushes.
“A “warning shot” was fired and he fled back into the thick vegetation. The area was immediately combed; the male was not seen but three bags containing the following items were found and lodged.”
In them, the police said, 141 packets of cigarettes, four cell phone and 11 lighters were found.
Authorities also confiscated one power pack to charge cell phones, one ear piece, a phone charger, 15 packets of small Ziploc bags and 1,794 grams of cannabis.
Contraband in the prisons is a big business, reportedly an arrangement involving inmates and prison officers.
While there have been reported incidents of items being thrown over the walls, there have also been cases of prison officers themselves who are involved in smuggling items.
Cigarettes and ganja and the smuggling of phones and chargers are said to be highly popular.
Authorities have stepped up security at the prisons after a deadly fire and escape in recent years, which leveled sections of the Camp Street jail.
