“Tales from Sugarcane Street,” a collection of short stories by writer Chevon Lim, was launched on Saturday at the National Library at Church Street, Georgetown.
This is Mrs. Lim’s first self published work of fiction. The stories are centered around five children and their unique experiences growing up on Sugarcane Street. This collection falls in the suspense/thriller genre and is the first of three books. The author is currently working on – ‘Sugarcane Girl’ and ‘Bush Tales’- all in the same genre.
It’s a e-book of stories that journeys into the worlds of adventures, mysteries, fairytales, magic and dreams; stories that go back in time and beyond to myths and legends, the real life of today and tomorrow, the passion, the beliefs and the wishes that come from deep within a child’s heart.
According to the author, chapters and phrases in the book were compiled while she was travelling across South and North America, Europe and Eurasia.
“This collection is dedicated to my grandmother, Justina Ince who sadly passed away three years ago. Incidentally I chose this day specifically for the launch, as it is her birthday. She would have been 82,” Mrs. Lim said.
Mrs. Chevon Lim is also a professional freelance writer, tourism /events consultant. She also has eight years experience working in and with the media. She is also a former Spanish, French and English tutor and the former Communications Manager at the Guyana Tourism Authority.
She also runs her blog www.sugarcanegirl. wordpress.com where you can follow the characters and see how the stories evolve. She said, “My intent is to use this platform to help other writers through the process of self publishing and to provide the literary support.”
As she continues on her literary endeavours, Mrs. Lim disclosed that a publishing company out of the USA has offered to publish her book, of course, at a cost.
“This was such a bitter sweet moment for me, so close and yet so far. Finally, someone other than me thought I had talent, but not I lack the resources t o follow through.”
“Tales from Sugarcane Street” will soon be available for sale in local book stores and on Amazon.
Working on her first book was no walk in the park and Mrs. Lim expressed gratitude to her family and friends for their unwavering support.
Participants at the launch were given a sneak peek of what is to be expected of the book by a reading of its prologue by Mrs. Lim who also unveiled the cover of the novel.
