Two lopsided wins by Mackenzie High and Linden Technical Institute (LTI) and a close encounter in favour of New Silvercity Secondary highlighted the start of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association’s Linden /Youth Basketball Guyana Linden Regional Schools Under-19 basketball championship, which got underway Friday afternoon at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court in Linden.
The championship bounced off in fine weather conditions as the first game featured Mackenzie High School showing early form to clobber their way past hapless Wismar Christianburg Wismar ‘Multi’ Secondary 104-21 with Yannick Tappin and Kareem Roberts with 29 points each and Leon Benjamin 27 combining for 85 points, as Kevlon Cadogan chipped in with nine for the winners who were ahead 44-8 at the break.
Only a 17 point performance was noteworthy by the Christianburg Wismar Secondary’s Matthew Peters.
Game two was also a one-sided affair with the Linden Technical Institute led by a 42 point performance from Jamal Gilkes, Daniel Lee with 18, Devon Duncan 17, Deshawn Mitchell 16 and Stephon Duncan 15 leading the onslaught for the LTI boys.
They led 52-3 at half time and the best players for the Harmony side were Kevin Somersaul with six points, as Ezekiel Hinds and Delroy Belle each chipped in with five apiece.
Game number three saw a much closer game with New Silvercity Secondary coming out winners 40-37 in what was a ding-dong affair in the end.
The eventual winners were up at half time 20-17 and were led to victory by Kobe Tappin’s 23 points showing as David Johnson added 11 in the winning performance. For the losing Wisburg Secondary side Jonathan Copeland had 16 points and Odwyn Baird and Keyon Davidson scored eight and seven points respectively.
The tournament will continue this afternoon with three more games at the MSC hard court.
In the first at 14.00hrs Christianburg Wismar Secondary take on Wisburg Secondary, then at 15.30hrs Harmony tackle New Silvercity Secondary and the third is between Mackenzie High and Linden Technical Institute at 17.00hrts.
On Wednesday another triple header card is to be played in the preliminary round robin format to determine the four teams advancing to the semifinals of this championship.
