Guyana defeated Barbados 70-64 on Saturday night at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex to even their three-match friendly series 1-1 after losing on Friday night by 17-points.
Head Coach of the visiting Guyanese outfit, Junior Hercules, had stated that his team was a bit nervous in the opener that they lost 93-76, but a confident side which was backed by a huge and voluble Guyanese crowd in the stands, produced a good team effort to defeat the ‘Bajans’ by 14 points.
Anthony Moe, who led the team in scoring in game one with 19 points, had an off night from the field on Saturday, making just four of his 20 attempts, while missing all of his nine three-pointers but he made up what he lacked offensively with some good defensive work which included six blocks to go along with his 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Harold Adams netted a team-high 15 points while Captain Stanton Rose sunk 11 points to go along with his nine rebounds, four steals and four assists. Orlan Glasgow had nine points and Shaine Webster swooshed seven for Guyana.
Moe, Webster, Adams, Glasgow and Rose started the game for Guyana.
Jeremy Gill had 13 points for Barbados, while Birkett had 15 points and they didn’t had another teammate that reached double digits in points.
Guyana led the first quarter 17 – 14 points but Barbados tightened up on defence to race to a three-point lead at half time (34 – 31) and at the end of the third quarter Barbados led 54-50.
However, the Guyanese outscored the home team 20 – 10 in the fourth quarter to close out the game and received a standing ovation from their supporters.
Game three of the series was contested last evening and scores were unavailable at press time. Guyana returned home today and will continue training at the Cliff Anderson Sports on Wednesday. Results of the series deciding game will be in tomorrow’s issue of Kaieteur Sport.
This three-match series is being used by both countries to prepare for this month’s (24 – 30) Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships in Paramaribo, Suriname.
At the CBC tournament in Suriname, the Guyanese Men are in Group A, with hosts and rivals Suriname, St Lucia, Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines, while Group B comprises Barbados, Bermuda, Antigua & Barbuda, Haiti and Montserrat.
