– court hears
A former member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) who allegedly stole from a woman known to him, then helped her search for the missing articles was on Friday charged and released on $130,000 bail.
Twenty-five- year-old Imran Khan, of 1753 Second Alley, West Minister, West Bank Demerara, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly, who read two charges to him.
The first charge alleged that on May 22, last, at Independence Boulevard, Georgetown, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Natasha Himchand and stole $500,000 in cash and other articles.
It was further alleged that on May 26, last, at Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, he assaulted Police Lance Corporal, Mark Moses, who was acting in the execution of his duty. Khan denied both allegations after they were read to him.
He was represented by Attorney-at-law Gordon Gilhuys, who asked that his client be released on reasonable bail.
The court heard that at the time of the break and enter, the defendant was a serving member of the GPF.
Police Prosecutor, Richard Harris, had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant but asked that it be in a substantial amount.
The court heard that the victim and the defendant are known to each other, since Khan would normally spend time at the victim’s home.
On May 22, last, the woman secured her home and went out, leaving the articles inside. Later in the day, when the woman returned home, she saw Khan and asked him to assist her to take some boxes into the house.
The court heard that when Khan opened that door, he drop the boxes and ran towards her shouting, “Thief! Thief! It look like thief went in the house.”
The woman said that she raised an alarm and the defendant went into the house and spent hours searching for the missing articles.
The teary woman went on to tell the court that the defendant spent nights at her home “in case the thief man comes back.”
It was days later that neighbours told the victim that they saw the defendant and another individual breaking into her home and leaving with a bag.
The matter was then reported to the Ruimveldt Police Station and an investigation was carried out and Khan was arrested.
Last week, a friend of Khan was also placed before the same Magistrate where he was also slapped with the same break and entry charge.
Guy Edmondson, of Lot 97 Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, is currently out on $80,000 bail.
Both men were instructed to make their next court appearance on June 14.
