Dear Editor,
It is either “a fair deal or no deal.” That is essentially what the Trump administration is saying to Canada and Mexico as it moves to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). However, the mindset of Trump in this regard should not surprise anyone. Everyone wants the best for themselves. So if Trump, one of the most controversial world leaders of our time can call for deals to be renegotiated so that he can get the best deal for his nation, then what is wrong with the leaders of Guyana?
Why is there absolute opposition to renegotiating a deal with ExxonMobil that leaves Guyanese eating crumbs from natural resources that belong to the people? Has the government forgotten that its duty is to serve the people and not ExxonMobil?
I am sure Guyanese would agree that this behaviour from the APNU + AFC party is in stark contrast to the values of transparency and accountability that it promised the people during its 2015 election campaign.
