Well known felon Delroy Thomas, 24, of Second Street, No2 Village, East Canje, Berbice has been jailed for six years on two charges.
Thomas, a mason, was on trial before Magistrate Renita Singh at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court on two charges—discharging a loaded firearm and attempting to commit a felony.
He was found guilty and sentenced to three years in jail on each charge. The sentences will run concurrently.
The case for the prosecution as presented by Inspector Althea Solomon, was that the mason was on February 11, 2018, in Welfare Street, Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice when he unlawfully and maliciously discharged a loaded firearm on at Namdeo Dilchand with the intent to maim, disfigure or cause him grievous bodily harm.
The second charge read that he attempted to commit robbery under arms on Dilchand at the same place and time.
The court was told that Dilchand who hails from the West Coast Berbice is a door-to-door goldsmith.
On the day in question, the man was plying his trade in the area when he was attacked by Thomas who was armed with a gun. The bandit fired a shot at the man injuring him. However, Thomas was unable to steal anything since the gunshot sound and the man’s cries attracted residents. Dilchand was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he underwent surgery.
Thomas escaped, but was subsequently nabbed while hiding in a fowl pen in his home village of Number Two Village, East Canje, Berbice.
He told the magistrate that he was not hiding , but had returned home late the night and was locked out of the house so he had to sleep in the fowl pen.
