A much larger turn out than last year cheered on the young swimmers with disabilities yesterday as the National Sports Commission (NSC) Annual Independence Swim Meet for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) at the Colgrain Pool yesterday with St. Barnabas Special School emerging as Champion team.
It was a wonderful day for the ‘Special Needs” Children from five schools as they engaged in keen competition in the pool and the delight of the winners was a sight to behold.
Instilling self confidence in differently abled Children is critical in their mental development and yesterday event went a long way in accomplishing that.
When Director of Sport Mr. Christopher Jones presented the 2017 PWD ‘Woman of the Year’ Award to Faithe King of St. Barnabas, she received a standing ovation from the vocal teachers and parents present.
After the meet, the Organsiers expressed satisfaction with the Level of participation and informed that more schools participated this year with St Barnabas Special School dominating; with five Gold, four Silver and five
Bronze Medals.
King was outstanding for the Champion School copping a Gold and a Silver, while Rohit Lowtan, with a couple of Gold Medals for Open Doors and Davena Nauth who had two Gold Medals for St Barnabas Special School were the outstanding Swimmers yesterday.
Diamond Special School with three Gold, four Silver and five Bronze Medals finished second to St. Barnabas Special School. Gifted Hands (1 Gold, 5 Silver, 3 Bronze), Open Doors (5 Gold) and HB Davis Special School (1 Gold, 1 Silver) followed in that order. (Sean Devers)
