A Human Resources Manager accused of inappropriate behaviour with a young, female job applicant was fired a year ago.
According to executives of Two Brothers Corp, a fuel distribution business that has locations along the coast, they took immediate action after the matter was brought to their attention by an employee that the woman complained to.
On Sunday, Kaieteur News published the account of the woman who, barely 21, went to the Eccles gas station location in response to a vacancy that was advertised.
While now employed elsewhere, the woman told of being interviewed by the manager who held onto her hands for what seemed to be an extraordinarily long time.
The manager seemed more interested in her than her academic qualifications and experience.
“He was asking things like ‘you have a boyfriend?’ and right after was saying ‘Such a pretty girl like you, you must have a man’ and then he went on to ask if I was Muslim.”
“He talked about himself and told me about his position in the company and how he is a proud Muslim…His conversation was far from professional,” the woman recounted.
She abruptly left the interview after becoming uncomfortable. She claimed that she was later called and told she had the job and was invited to meet elsewhere with the manager.
The woman, who badly wanted the job, took the hard path and refused it.
However, she reportedly had complained to a staffer at the Eccles gas station location of Two Brothers.
This week, in response to the article, Chief Executive Officer, Faiaz Ali and his Operations Manager, Sadia Ali-Rahaman, made it clear that Two Brothers does not condone such behaviour.
In fact, based on complaints, and after investigations, in which the female confirmed the incident, the HR manager was sacked.
“I am hurt that a female could have been subjected to that kind of behaviour. I feel for her. At the same time, I want it to be known that our company does not condone sexual harassment of any kind,” the Operations Manager said.
“We actually pride ourselves as being a safe haven for abused victims. We have and always have been a family company. Communities are important to us and wherever we are, we give back.”
The Operations Manager explained that after becoming aware of the alleged behaviour of the HR manager, her CEO interviewed the woman, who told of her experience.
“We immediately dismissed the HR manager.”
According to the CEO, the manager had come highly recommended and had been working for just over six months.
The CEO said the man came with good recommendations and fit the profile of what the company was looking for.
He noted that his company has females who account to about 85 percent of the workforce.
The executives made it clear that Two Brothers applauds victims for speaking out.
“I am truly sorry that the young lady had that experience at our organization, but that isn’t who we are.”
