More than one month after one of the most deadly high seas pirate attacks in the region, police yesterday charged a teen with murder.
However, from all indications the investigators and prosecutors will be using the teen as a key witness in the case.
Late yesterday afternoon, police escorted the teen, who was without handcuffs and shackles, to the courtroom of Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus, who read him a murder charge.
Nineteen-year-old Alexander De Harte of 79 Village West Coast Berbice, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which states that between April 21 and May 3, while being in Guyana territorial waters, he murdered Tilacknauth Mohabir called ‘Caiman’ during the course of a robbery.
The charge was filed under Section Three of the Hijacking and Piracy Act Chapter 10:08.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that the case file is still incomplete.
The teenager is due back in court on June 13 when he will appear at Springlands.
De Harte, after being remanded, was quickly whisked away through the back gate at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Just one week ago, businessman Nakool Manohar, called ‘Fyah’ 39, of Number 43 Village, Berbice, was also charged with the same murder.
He appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh in the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
