A father of eight yesterday made an appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and was remanded to prison on a charge of trafficking three pounds of marijuana.
Sean Barker, 41,a bus driver, of Republic Avenue, Mackenzie, Linden, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus.
It is alleged that on June 3 at 111 Miles Mahdia, Potaro, in the Essequibo Magisterial District, Barker had in his possession 1,030 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking .
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor, Gordon Mansfield, stated that on the day in question, police acting on information went to a hotel where they made contact with the defendant.
The court heard that a search was conducted in the room where the defendant was the lone occupant and a multi-coloured haversack was in the cupboard.
A further search was conducted in the bag and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be narcotics were discovered inside.
The defendant was cautioned and he admitted that the bag belonged to him but he had no knowledge of the narcotics. He was then arrested and taken to the station.
The prosecutor objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the prevalence of the offence.
The prosecution’s objection was upheld and the defendant was remanded. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on June 15.
