Pepsi Hornets (right) dominated the contest entirely against Yamaha Caribs in their Bounty Farm XVs match.
Lonsdale Brown along with Paebo Henry scored two tries each to guide Pepsi Hornets to an emphatic 42-8 victory in a bottom of the table clash yesterday afternoon at the National Park rugby field when the Bounty Farm/ Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) XVs tournament continued.
On a soggy and muddy pitch, Claudius Butts scored eight early points, a try and a penalty which amounted to the entire Caribs’ point’s tally that had allowed the losing side to lead the match during a brief spell.
Assisting Brown and Henry were captain Ryan Gonsalves, Blaise Bailey, Elwin Chase, Jason Tyrell and Peabo Hamilton with a try each. Meanwhile, Leon Greaves scored two conversions including a penalty, and Gonsalves successfully kicked one conversion to finish the game with seven points.
Caribs (right) trailed Hornets 27-8 heading into the second half but failed to add to their tally as the match ended with a final score of 42-8.
Halftime finished with the score 27-8 but the Hornets’ sting numbed the Caribs and they were unable to score during the second period of play as the winners registered 15 unanswered points during the second 40 minutes of action, witnessed by a handful of spectators that were mainly players from other teams, including part-time cheerleader Rondel McArthur.
After the game, Lonsdale Brown stated that he felt really great to be among the top performers for his team after not competing for some five years. Brown explained his reason for coming out of retirement was because of the recent poor run of form by Hornets, “People been talking bad about the club and I just came out to prove to everybody that Hornets is still a force to reckon with. Especially with me on the pitch and I intend to stick around and play for a while to ensure the clubs gets back on track in the XVs format.”
Currently, Guyana Defence Force are on track to successfully defend their title. They are top of the points table with 31 points, ahead of second placed Panthers who have 28. Police Falcons are third, Hornets fourth and Caribs last. The League continues today with Panthers scrumming with Falcons fro
