Dear Editor,
Every indigenous individual in this country of Guyana, at least once, has experienced their share of discrimination before and the insult Mae’s has demonstrated by attempting to degrade an indigenous student’s identity is a sign that the ‘’silent serial killer-Racism’’ is alive and well.
Indigenous people are the first people in this country and we will forever be, but Mr. Editor we are also the first and worst to be affected by Racism, discrimination, and inequality (also climate change).
Mae’s incident is a sample of a battle that indigenous people have been fighting since the beginning of the Europeans meeting our shores.
Most Guyanese in our country don’t face these issues of being labelled and not having their rights respected to demonstrate their cultural identity. Most are not treated as if they are a developmental problem.
With that, Guyana is not any different from the countries that treat Indigenous unlawfully. The development of Mae’s is directly related to indigenous people in Guyana plight and those of around the world.
Mr. Editor almost 50% of Indigenous Guyanese are young people. This is a demonstration that in the near future we either be a statistic or the bones that lead the country in a sustainable path.
We can no longer tolerate the level of discrimination that exists towards the Indigenous people of this country. Standing with the people at Mae’s gave me the feeling that ‘’enough is enough’’.
The school’s attitude is as if the indigenous students don’t deserve an apology but then that’s the personality of the administration of the school. I am urging my fellow brothers and sisters whom I know had their share of discrimination to come out and support.
The strength to hold this from being throwing under the rug lies with us who support.
