Bail to the tune of $200,000 was yesterday granted to Melisha Silas, nearly a week after she reportedly confessed to strangling her reputed husband, Julian Anthony Ribeiro, during an altercation at their Soesdyke home on Mother’s Day.
Silas, who is five months pregnant, appeared before City Magistrate Leron Daly who read a manslaughter charge to her. Particulars of the charge alleged that on May 13, at Soesdyke, she murdered 32-year-old Ribeiro called ‘Yankee’.
The woman, who was represented by counsel, was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was released on bail after Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh raised no objections.
Based on reports, Silas was further interrogated by detectives after various statements relating to the death of her spouse did not add up. Initially, the woman allegedly told police that on the evening of May 12, her husband came home intoxicated and fell and hit his head. In another statement, she is said to have told cops that she tried waking him up from the bed and he was unresponsive.
What reportedly raised eyebrows and blew the case wide open were the findings of the autopsy done by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh, which indicated that the victim died of asphyxiation caused by compression injuries to the neck, in other words death by strangulation.
It was after the post mortem report that Silas reportedly confessed to strangling her common law husband, who was drunk, during an altercation at their home.
The expecting mother is not due back in court until June 18, when she will appear before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
