“Everything around me right now is only because of God…and I always tell Him that I want to become a big business man with no fewer than 20 employees. Right now I have 17, which is good.”
These are the words of Kellon Nedd, one of Linden’s most enterprising young entrepreneurs.
Nedd recently took a quantum leap and transitioned from his Dollar Wings Riverfront Tent to a plush restaurant in the popular Toucan Mall in Amelia’s Ward.
Sounds impossible? Well not for Nedd, who last year rolled out his dream of providing cheap fast food to Lindeners.
To the cynical, selling a piece of chicken for one hundred dollars might seem like an exercise in stupidity, but Nedd has proven the wisdom of his decision because today, “Nedd’s Dollar Wings” has seen phenomenal growth. The business had initially started out with two.
The “Dollar Wings” Tent which graces the riverfront on Co-op Crescent, becomes a hive of activity shortly after five in the afternoons. Passersby jostle each other to get their quota of chicken and chips.
Nedd said that it was this positive response that led him to rent a space in the Toucan Mall to cater to the residents in Amelia’s Ward.
This venture would soon open his eyes to other possibilities, and thus the idea of establishing a full- fledged restaurant was birthed.
The new Restaurant which sits next to “Nedds Dollar Wings” in the Toucan Mall, was opened on Mother’s Day.
Reflecting on the event, the young entrepreneur said that the response was phenomenal.
Many agree that the new restaurant with its unique and exquisite ambience has taken dining in the mining town to another level. It is open for the hosting of weddings, birthdays and other special events.
Kellon well known to friends and acquaintances as “Bashment” always dreamed of becoming a businessman.
That dream was fully nurtured by his parents who are also prominent entrepreneurs in Linden.
Nedd recalled heading to Georgetown as a nine-year-old with about $400 in his pocket to shop for his mother, Fern.
“In those days that was big money, and I think that is when I realized that I wanted to be just like my parents. I would run my own business one day and be my own boss”, Nedd reflected.
However, Nedd would later spread his wings by migrating for a while to St Lucia, where he met his wife, Sherlyn. At the time he was involved in construction work.
It was however while there that he decided that he would return to Guyana and establish his own business. The idea for “Dollar Wings” was actually conceptualized in St Lucia, he said.
But Nedd did not venture into this business right away. He operated a taxi service. His wife who has now made Guyana her home, enrolled at the Charles Rosa school of Nursing.
But both would soon quit their former callings to pursue their dream, which was business.
The result is what Lindeners are enjoying today, “Nedds Dollar Wings” and “Kingdom Style Restaurant”–a husband and wife venture….a quantum leap of Faith!
