Farmers in the Pomeroon are now to benefit from a brand new engine, which was donated to the Pomeroon Farmers Association [PFA], by Pomeroon Oil mill yesterday.
The engine was handed over by the General Manager of the Alfro Alphonso Group of Companies, Eric Gomes, to Rudolph Garraway, a representative of the farmers’ association.
Kaieteur News understands that the Association negotiated with the Pomeroon Oil Mill, to have an engine donated to them some time in the past. The Mill which is owned by prominent businessman, Alfro Alphonso, decided to donate the engines to benefit farmers, via the association.
Mr. Gomes noted that Rudolph Garraway will be solely responsible for the motor; he will be responsible for keeping, fueling and caring for it. The manager noted that Garraway will use the engine primarily for community works.
According to reports, cell phone reception and access to television networks within the Pomeroon, is poor. This poses a major challenge for farmers who are especially located in creeks and canals away from the major traffic areas.
As a member of the Farmers’ Association, Garraway normally reaches out to these remote locations, updating and taking orders on behalf of famers.
Garraway explained that this was costly in the past, since the association did not own its own engine and had to hire a private boat.
“When the association has meetings people aren’t aware of it, so I move about and talk to them. The new motor would be used to transport not only farmers from the Pomeroon, but also produce; whether coconuts, copra or plantains.
“The engine will also be used to seek out markets on behalf of farmers.”
He noted that member of the farmers’ association are now hoping that something beneficial will come out from the farmers in the lower and upper Pomeroon.
