Chetram Singh, called “Roy”, 28, a deportee of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice, who was recently released from jail after serving five years has been jailed again, this time for three years.
The man was caught red-handed in a house of some overseas-based Guyanese. Ironically it was the said house in which he was caught when he received his previous five years jail sentence.
Singh is accused of breaking and entering the dwelling house of Sahodra Ramlagan, called “Baby” on Saturday April 14, 2018 at Betsy Ground.
The court was told that around 17:30 hrs on the day in question the woman secured her premises and went out with some relatives. She returned around 03:30 hrs the following day.
Upon entering her yard she noticed the upstairs light on. She did not leave any light on in the upper flat. Upon entering the house and pushing the upstairs door she noticed a pair of pants on the verandah. She immediately called the police who responded promptly.
The police entered the house and in searching one of the bedrooms, found that the door was not opening, although the latch was not on. The ranks tried and subsequently forced open the door and found the bandit lying half naked on the floor. He was arrested and charged.
A bag filled with gold and silver jewelry, cosmetics, medication and other items which the bandit had stolen was found stashed in a corner of the house.
He appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh in the Reliance Magistrate Court and was found guilty.
On the previous occasion he was sentenced on two successive days to two five-year term each. Those sentences had run concurrently.
