Dear Editor,
So, it is Gail Teixeira’s view that the D’Urban Park Project is a colossal failure. What a statement! For that matter, what a tremendous lie.
Deviously, she has conjured up issues of impropriety in terms of monies spent on its construction by the coalition government, by alluding to auditing now being done. Even so, the project is definitely not a failure, as this senior member of the PPP/C propaganda machine would want us to believe on the CNS Channel 6 programme, “Matters of public importance”.
From a stretch of land space that had been sand-filled by her then government at a reported cost of $15M, for a planned social spot, and a plan which became abandoned – D’Urban Park, since its conversion into a Stadium, has been put to its planned uses: that of hosting state and national occasions; religious meetings, medical expos, exercise facility and any other social event that will benefit citizens of Georgetown, and from any other locale.
It is a meeting place for the people – a facility that had been sadly lacking for so many years, especially for residents of Southern Georgetown. One can only conclude that her then government did not proceed with the exercise, since its location is in the heartland of PNC constituents.
Editor, we are reminded of the PPP/C’s political strategy of spiting non- traditional areas of support.
Anyone who has been observing the flow of attendees to any national event, held in the City would know that a very significant flow mostly originates from the Southern city wards. Though, through the decades, they in their thousands would have patriotically journeyed to the former designated place at the National Park, most of those citizens would have had logistical problems in returning to their communities.
Personally, I used to ponder the possibility of building a sports facility at such a location, given its very convenient site, and what it would do for the surrounding communities.
Editor, as had been reported earlier, such a facility has been planned for the eastern bloc of the Park. It would be a great day for residents of the City, especially with the cause of advancing social cohesion.
I can understand Teixeira’s sad disappointment that after a wasted huge sum of citizen’s money, and a jungle that became a haven for retiles, and which land began to drain water during heavy rainfall into the Hadfield Street community – Not only has a facility for the people been built, but that the entire east -west causeway has been re-built from a pot-holed roadway to a beautifully made conduit for road traffic.
That is what meaningful progress is all about, Ms. Teixeira. I do not believe for a moment, that you can possibly dispute this.
Regards
Dillon Goring
