An elderly man was yesterday sentenced to three years in prison after he was slapped with three separate narcotic charges in the Suddie Magistrate Court.
Leonard Paul, of Supenaam, Essequibo Coast, appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam yesterday, to answer two separate charges relating to the possession of narcotics.
The first charge read that on April 12, 2017 Paul trafficked and sold to a police constable, six grams of cannabis. The second charge read that on the same day, the man also had in his possession 20 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Paul who was represented by an Attorney-at-law, pleaded guilty to both charges. He was then fined $30,000 for each charge and sentenced to three years on each charge. The sentences will run concurrently.
The man’s Attorney, Motee Singh, pleaded with Magistrate Esther Sam that his client’s sentences be reduced to a minimum. Singh noted that his client saved the court considerable amount of time by pleading guilty, and that the court should take into consideration Paul’s age.
Paul was already serving a three-year sentence for the possession of narcotics back in April. Paul’s Attorney also recommended that his client serve his three years concurrent to his previous sentences.
