In what is being described as a major development, sections of Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice, are now receiving free WiFi.
The community is located seven miles off the main road with no phone lines.
On Monday, the Cultural Training Centre in Yakusari, one of the wards in Black Bush, was turned on, much to the delight of residents who gathered around. It is the plan to transform the centre into a hub.
Work is also being done by officials of the Ministry of Public Telecommunication with the Yakusari and Johanna Primary Schools. The connections became operational yesterday.
The Prime Minister’s Representative to Region Six, Gobin Harbhajan, when contacted, disclosed that the project is indeed underway after residents clamoured for something to be done.
He said that through his office, he appealed to the Ministry and Minister Cathy Hughes and her team, to put things into motion.
In the past few days, after a scoping mission, work was done at the training centre, with the equipment installed.
“In the coming days, they will be installing computers so that the people, mostly farmers of Black Bush, can benefit.”
According to Harbhajan, there will be an official commissioning as early as next week.
Black Bush had the unfortunate branding as being an area of high suicide.
According to Harbhajan, this is a major development for the community.
Visiting the area to inspect the works was Chairman of the National Data Management Authority, Floyd Levi.
