Yesterday at their Head Office in Brickdam GTT handed over a sponsorship Cheque to Queen’s College as they prepare to travel to 32nd annual Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Cricket tournament in Barbados.
This year’s tournament is scheduled for July 9-25 and Teacher at QC, Mohamed Nassir, who will perform the duties of Coach and Vice-Captain Rolando McGarrell, one of six Students with previous experience of playing in Barbados, both thanked the Telephone providers for their contribution.
Mohamed informed that preparations have already commenced for their second trip to the tournament after making their debut in 2016.
“We have planned a few practice games before we leave and our team will be led by 2016 National U-15 player Amos Sarwan. We are set to depart Guyana on July 7 and return on July 27,” Mohammed informed.
McGarrell said his team is a well balanced one and he feels that the bowling could make the difference on the Bajan tracks which are a lot quicker than the ones here
Named after Sir Garfield Sobers, the only living Barbadian National Hero, the 40-over tournament attracts school teams from all over the World.
Since it’s inauguration in 1986 the Tournament has given school boys an opportunity of playing in an international tournament and retired West Indies captain, Brian Lara, Darren Ganga, Roland Holder, several English and South African Test players have come out of this tournament.
The top two teams play in the final at the Test venue Kensington Oval and usually get to meet some of the greatest cricketers that ever lived including Sobers, Sir Everton Weekes, Sir Wesley Hall, Sir Charles Griffith, Seymour Nurse, Joel Garner and Desmond Haynes.
After the final, a festival game is played between the best Caribbean players and a combined UK side. (Sean Devers)
