Malcolm Brown, a 30-year-old unemployed resident of Belmont, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, was yesterday charged for the murder of Mahaica vendor, Fareez Yassem.
Magistrate Wanda Fortune read the indictable charge to Brown, which stated that he murdered Yassem, also of Belmont, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, on May 14, 2018.
Brown was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison until June 8.
The charges brought against Brown stem from Yassem being found dead in his yard, in the wee hours of Monday last, with multiple stab wounds to the body.
Yassem’s wife claimed that her husband woke up to noises coming from a bond that was adjoined to their house, around 01:45hrs, and went to investigate. There was a scuffle with someone, since Yassem could be heard shouting ‘thief’, while sounds of a commotion came from the direction where Yassem was. There was a deafening silence shortly after.
When neighbours and Yassem’s family ventured out, they found him in a drain covered in blood. He appeared to have been stabbed multiple times.
A slippers and a bicycle were found at the scene of the crime, and police were reportedly able to move on Brown after individuals positively identified the bicycle and slippers to be his.
Yassem who was a vendor at the Mahaica Market, and was referred to as a hustler by neighbours, leaves to mourn a wife and three kids.
