…stems from tussle over Cuban visitors
A Cuban national is nursing a broken arm and injuries to his neck and face after being assaulted by a group at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
Marvis Dasiel, a Cuban national who has been residing in Guyana for the past eight months, has been shuttling Cuban nationals from the Airport to accommodations in Georgetown.
Increasingly, Cubans have been visiting Guyana for commerce, shopping at city stores, owned mostly by Chinese.
It appears that Dasiel clashed with Guyanese who have been shuttling Cubans to the city. The injured man speaking with this publication through a translator claims that over the last few months he has been getting ‘a fight down’ from Guyanese transportation operators.
Dasiel claims that on Wednesday, last, while waiting to collect two Cuban nationals, he was approached by a Guyanese he identified as ‘Marvin’ who claimed that the Clients were his.
Dasiel said an argument ensued and a number of individuals attacked and assaulted him, causing the injuries.
A report was made at the Timehri Police Station. The incident occurred about 1:30 p.m.
This publication reached out to the individuals whom Dasiel claimed assaulted him.
Corwyn Williams, one of the persons identified by Dasiel in the attack, has denied involvement.
There has been a growing business of shuttling Cuban nationals to and from the airport. With the shuttle service, there has been a culture of ‘touting’ emerging at the main international airport, similar to what occurs at minibus parks in Georgetown.
Concerns have been expressed by airport authorities and in many instances police had to be called in to restore order.
This incident has shown that the situation has reached a new level that requires an intervention by the airport’s administration.
