The Bernice Mansell Foundation yesterday celebrated seven mothers at the 19th annual Mother’s Day Award held at Parc Rayne Banquet Hall, Rahaman’s Park, Georgetown.
Founder of the organisation, Bernice Mansell, said that Mother’s Day is set aside to specially honour mothers for their sterling contribution in shaping the lives of their children.
She added that mothers are recognised each year for their outstanding contribution as mothers at home and the wider community.
Among the honourees were Glynis Alonzo-Beaton, Allison Camacho, Trenetta Elliot, Rev. Gaitri Singh Henry, Jennifer Lowe, Ivy Lyte and Norma Yearwood.
The first mother to receive her award was Alonzo-Beaton, a business owner who is recognised at the regional level as a Board Member of the Caribbean and International Diabetes Association.
Camacho received an award, having worked with the Regional Democratic Council, Region Nine and the cultural arm of the Brazilian Embassy for 14 years.
Camacho was a broadcaster of the first community radio station Radio Lethem 95.
Elliot also made the cut. She graduated with a Diploma from the University of Guyana in the field of social work; she also received a Bachelor’s Degree and is currently pursuing her Masters.
Rev. Singh-Henry is a minister at the Burns Memorial Presbyterian Church. She studied at the Cyril Potter College of Education.
Another ecstatic award recipient was Ms. Lowe, a teacher who is loved by many children who shared the privilege of sitting in her classroom.
Central Corentyne High School graduate, Lyte, was also recognised.
The second of six siblings, Yearwood’s efforts were not left unnoticed.
Yearwood was employed at the Guyana Legion, The Ministry of Education and the University of Guyana.
Mansell expressed gratitude to those who supported the event and pointed out that it is important for brave mothers to be saluted for having successfully undertaken the most important role that contributes towards positivism in society.
