Dear Editor,
After a pattern set by Dr. Martin Luther King, here is a letter from Paul the Apostle. It is captioned: “Paul’s Letter to Mothers of the World”.
It may seem strange to you today, that I, Saint Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, would be writing a letter to you- the mothers of the world. You would notice that this letter is not addressed to the mothers of any particular group alone, but instead it is addressed to every mother in every society throughout the entire world.
I know that you know that I have written several other letters also which appear in the Holy Bible but I must let you know that I wrote this one especially to you. I say to you, do not worry yourselves about the exact date that it was written- just meditate on the words.
Mothers! I greet you in the name of our coming King and Lord, Jesus Christ. Today is not just another ordinary day. It is the day that the Lord has made and you need to rejoice and be glad in it. It is called Mother’s Day because it is set aside to give loved ones the opportunity to recognize, appreciate and demonstrate their love for you.
Your loved ones usually include your own husband, your children your grandchildren, other relatives, friends and well-wishers. In my time, we did not have a Mother’s Day but we still loved and respected our Mothers and Grandmothers too, and so I congratulate and bless you and I release a special anointing over your lives today.
Mothers! As you join in the celebration with those who celebrate you, I beseech you, not to forget that you owe everything to our Blessed Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Mothers! You are indeed special. In fact, you are so special that your title appears a total of 292 times in the Holy Book. I myself have written about mothers in some of my earlier letters.
In my letter to the Ephesians, I advised your children to honour you so that they may be blessed with long life. You see, mothers? You are so divinely important that by just honouring you your children can be blessed with long life.
Mothers! I am so concerned with you that on the second occasion when I wrote to Timothy I reminded him of the outstanding work that his mother and grandmother did in nurturing and training him up.
Today I ask you, I entreat you, I beg of you to try your best to become just like Timothy’s mother and grandmother. They are excellent examples to follow… train up your children just like they trained up Timothy so that when they are old enough they will not depart from the training but they will attend Sunday School, they will attend young people fellowship, they will attend prayer meetings, they will attend Bible study they will attend church every Sunday and give their hearts to the Lord while they are young and while the Lord can still be found.
Today, I beg of you to copy the attitudes and behaviours of the outstanding mothers mentioned in your Bible. I have never met him because he was before my time, but I understand that the wisest man who ever lived was one King Solomon who wrote a book called the Proverbs.
It is a book, which is filled with many wise words and in the last chapter, which is Chapter 31, he records all the good and nice things of a woman and mother.
It has come to my attention that you describe such a woman as the Proverbs 31 woman and I can only ask you to try to be just like her and even better than her.
Mothers! Even though you are fearfully and wonderfully made and even though you are blessed and highly favoured, I still grieve for you.
In my time, there was no radio, no television, no newspapers, no cell phone and no social media like you have these days, but whenever I stand in heaven and look at your newspapers and television I grieve because of how you are treated.
I see stories which tell me that you have been beaten, you have been brutalized, you have been abused, you have been raped, you have been murdered, and you have been violated in so many unspeakable ways that it is a miracle that you still remain standing. All those things have happened to you because of that thing which is called domestic violence.
You have no right to suffer the way you have suffered. I look at your eyes and notice that they are swollen from years of tears and your knees are blackened from kneeling praying, and you continually ask yourselves, “How much more can I take?”
You ask also, “Where is my deliverance?”
Well, I, Paul the Apostle, wish to tell you that your deliverance is on its way.
Remain steadfast in Christ Jesus. Pray without ceasing. Continue to lean upon the word of God and not upon your own understanding. I know that sometimes you feel like if God has abandoned you, but that is not true. He is always by your side. He promised never to leave you alone.
Mothers! My final request is for you to teach your sons to respect their sisters so that when they grow up they will know how to respect and treat women and will know to respect and treat their wives and not cause them to suffer domestic violence.
Remember that God will not allow you to be tested beyond your ability and beyond your faith and like I have said to Timothy, you must be able to say, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, and I have kept the faith.”
Keep the faith my brethrens, keep the faith.
If you do these things, I can assure you that one day we will all meet face to face in that place which Christ has gone to prepare for us.
A Happy and Blessed Mothers’ Day to you all.
Francis Carryl
