Guyanese-born NY police captain centre of sex harassment probe

New York (New York Daily News)- An NYPD captain who once filed a complaint against a superior officer over alleged racist comments has become the subject of a sexual harassment investigation over accusations he offered female cops he supervised prime assignments in exchange for dates, the Daily News has learned.
So far, three cops have filed sexual harassment complaints with the NYPD’s Equal Employment Opportunity Commission office against Capt. Yugisteer (Roger) Sankerdial of the 114th Precinct in Astoria, Queens, sources said.
The women claim Sankerdial, 48, was overly complimentary about their looks and asked them out on dates, claiming he would make them his personal driver or give them similar sought-after assignments if they slept with him.
“He would say if they went on a date with him he would take care of them,” a source said. “He would make the female officer feel very uncomfortable. When he would come out and ask, ‘Who wants to drive me?’ they would all run out of the building.”
Sankerdial is a Marine Corps veteran promoted to NYPD captain early last year. He has been with the NYPD 16 years.
In 2005, he and three other officers filed Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaints against their Queens North Task Force sergeant, Michael Patrone, accusing him of expressing hatred for minorities, spewing racist comments and using derogatory terms when dealing with minority civilians.
Sankerdial, who is Guyanese, and his three colleagues told The News at the time that the NYPD was slow to respond to their claims and that they were retaliated against with threats.
Patrone ended up losing a few vacation days and ultimately retired.
An NYPD spokesman said the department was investigating the claims against Sankerdial.
“Sexual harassment is against the law, and the NYPD takes seriously any accusations of this unacceptable behavior,” the spokesman said.
Sankerdial denies any wrongdoing, said Roy Richter, the president of the NYPD’s Captains Endowment Association.
“He’s flabbergasted by the allegations, which are completely false,” Richter said.
The captain was also the subject of an A&E interview about his experiences at Ground Zero. He was five weeks into his NYPD Academy training when he responded to the Twin Towers on 9/11.
