Dear Editor
In the telephone conversation on the evening of Sunday May 6 in relation to the case of the missing diamonds I had promised to submit to your newspaper my comments related to the issue. I now so do.
My alleged involvement in this matter has caused grave embarrassment not only to me, but also to my family, relatives and friends the world over.
Sir, I served the Guyana Police Force for thirty-five years with an unblemished record; for more than thirty of those years I have been attached to the Criminal Investigation Department where I served in various capacities in various parts of the country. Throughout my career I received commendations and awards on occasions of which I am proud.
It was stated that information about the missing diamonds was provided by an ‘elderly Officer’ who resides out of the jurisdiction. Someone supposedly detailed by this elderly gentleman, allegedly informed me of diamonds and I in turn instructed the bearer to take same to the Crime Chief Mr. Floyd McDonald. This is an absolute untruth; it never happened.
I do have recollection of incidents, persons and cases in which I was involved in a professional capacity over the years; many were cases of far less importance than the one referenced. It would be remiss of me not to recall anything pertaining to this case of such magnitude.
I must emphasize that I do not know of nor have ever seen any of the mentioned diamonds; I was never shown any diamonds; nor did I have a conversation with the Crime Chief Mr. Mc Donald or anyone else pertaining to diamonds.
Please permit me to interject and point out that my tenure in the force was punctuated with being very meticulous. I therefore would not have dispatched the bearer without first examining the article or without some form of documentation.
I categorically state here that I know absolutely nothing about this matter and am open for any confrontation to set the Records straight.
In closing please permit me to commend your reporter for the professionalism displayed and I ask that you kindly publish this letter with some prominence to bring some clarity to the situation.
Yours truly,
Harley Davidson (Deputy Crime Chief- Retired)
