The Ministry of Social Protection, Labour Occupational Safety and Health Department accompanied by police in B’ Division, on Tuesday, shut down a Chinese business which has been operating out of No.2 Village, East Canje Berbice.
The action came after the department cited the business for illegal practices.
In a notice served on the owners of Zhou Glass Window Enterprise, it was stated that the business was found in breach of the laws of Guyana and the Labour and Occupational Safety and Health Act after verbal warnings were given to have the breaches rectified.
The notice added that since the business failed to take the necessary corrective action to ensure the safety and health of all workers employed and those that execute work on their behalf which resulted in the injury of two workers on April 10, last.
Kaieteur News understands that the Ministry had visited the location at Canje in November 2017. Observations were made on poor housekeeping practices, absence of a first aid kit, absence of a trained first aider, and unsafe and unhealthy conditions of work for workers.
On April 10, a container with glass was being offloaded when two workers were injured during the process. The supervisor at the time who recruited the workers failed to report the incident to the Ministry as required by law.
The Ministry was only informed of the incident when one of the injured workers visited the office seeking redress for his injuries sustained.
Officials visited the Albion location, another branch, and spoke to another Chinese national. A message was left for the employer to visit the office to provide the necessary information pertaining to the accident that took place.
The owner, Mr. Sang later visited the office with the supervisor and provided information as requested.
The Albion location was also expected to be shut down yesterday for the same malpractices. The Canje business was ordered closed until further notice.
