Dear Editor,
May 5 marks 200 years since the birth of one of the greatest revolutionary thinker of all times. I refer to none other than the German philosopher, Karl Marx.
Several celebratory activities are being held throughout the world in honour of this iconic and monumental philosopher especially in his hometown in Germany, Trier, where a18-feet statue was erected in his honour.
To say that Marx’s ideas have influenced millions of people throughout the world would be an understatement.
He did much more. He shook the foundations of the capitalist system and showed that there is an alternative model of development where the working class is not only the creators of wealth but also the prime beneficiaries of that wealth.
Not surprisingly, his ideas continue to inspire millions of people throughout the world who long for a more humane and dignified existence.
“Philosophers have interpreted the world in various ways; the point, however, is to change it,”
he once wrote.
Marx, to his credit, not only interpreted the world but he managed through his radical and voluminous writings to be that catalyst for fundamental changes to the structure of global politics and economy.
As we observe the birth centennial of Dr. Cheddi Jagan this year, we should also reflect on the bi-centennial of the birth of Karl Marx whose influence on Dr. Jagan especially during his early years was both substantial and defining.
