Dear Editor,
A few months back I wrote a letter highlighting the sad and indomitable state of affairs at the Maha Sabha. In my letter, I pointed out the incompetence and lack of enthusiasm with which the priest of the mandir carried out his sermon.
My letter was subsequently replied to with several persons validating the contents of my letter and the truth it held within, while a very few other lambasted me for being critical of a priest.
It has been several months since my last letter and the question lingers, ‘what has become of the Maha Sabha? I was made to understand from close sources, the situation at the Maha Sabha has become worst. The Sabha now stands within the court of law as the very priest I spoke of now summons the temple of God to the corridors of the courts.
Why? All in the name of power. Has our society truly gone mad, that they continue to accept such a person as a leader in Dharma? Where do we stand today as Hindus if this is the manner in which our leaders act? Are these men of God so “untouchable” that we fear questioning them and holding them accountable will spell doom for us? What shame!
The Hindus in Guyana need the guidance and support that the Maha Sabha has the resources to offer, yet for many years on the organization continues to engulf itself in the fire of shame and inefficiency!
Absolutely none of its social programmes comes to fruition because they are either blocked by the Pandit or poorly carried out. I have a very close associate who is a popular figure on the radio and one who works tirelessly to promote the activities of the Maha Sabha.
When I questioned her about the Sabha’s annual Mother’s Day programme and Arrival Day celebrations she was pushed to near tears as she described the manner in which she was treated when she approached the priest of the temple for permission to hold these events!
Today we celebrate 180 Years since our ancestors landed on these shores and the Sabha being the first and oldest Hindu organization in this country should’ve been the forerunner in upholding and celebrating such a milestone.
But that’s not the case since ego has engulfed the leaders to whom we look up.
Finally Editor, what has happened to the senior pandits of this country? Why have they continued to turn deaf ears to the conduct of this particular priest? Are they too condoning such behavior or are they just choosing to turn a blind eye? I await a response from even one who cares to indulge!
Mr. Editor, I can choose to sit back and forget altogether about the affairs of the Sabha, but my conscience pricks me every time I drive past the temple and see it in the state it currently is. On a day like today I can’t help but think what the reaction of my ancestors would be if they could’ve foreseen 180 years ago the turmoil which our people face.
When will the Maha Sabha regain its standing? Is it correct for Hindus in Guyana to remain quiet over situations like these? I will continue to speak out and stand for what’s right because I am a true follower of Santana Dharma. I will not stop until I see genuine change at a place I once held dear to my heart!
On a brighter note, the very best wishes to all celebrating Arrival Day. May you remember your ancestors and the sacrifice they would’ve made so that you can reap the benefits today.
Yours respectfully,
Badree Etwaroo, PhD.
