DEAR EDITOR,
The APNU/AFC Coalition Government continues to create more hardship for pensioners. By already cutting subsidies for electricity and water from pensioners, this government decided to turn to GuySuCo pensioners, by instituting that these pensioners (the most vulnerable group of citizens) go to the commercial banks to receive their pension.
Most pensioners receive less than a thousand dollars per week and have to now go to the commercial banks to receive this small amount of money. The management of GuySuCo should be ashamed to implement this decision.
Several months ago, the pensioners from Rose Hall Estate joined PPP in the picket line to register their dissatisfaction at the actions of GuySuCo, but the Coalition Government doesn’t care, so I am elated to see that the other pensioners are protesting against this decision.
What is even more hypocritical is that Granger, Nagamootoo and 90% of the Cabinet are pensioners, and as such, they should have some amount of compassion for these poor workers and let the Chairman of the GuySuCo Board, who is also a pensioner, ensure that this decision is changed immediately.
GuySuCo should do the math and know that transportation and bank charges alone might not be economical for the pensioners to receive their pension.
As pensioners, President Granger and Prime Minister Nagamootoo should ensure that pensioners are treated with dignity and respect, and honour their contribution. Remember what goes around comes around.
