Dear Sir,
Permit me a space in your newspaper to add my support to a friend who I think deserves to be voted best teacher.
Ossie and I met as freshmen at the University of Guyana in the late nineties. Unassuming, quiet and relatively cool human might be an understatement in reference to his disposition .
As I glanced through the pages of the Sunday edition of each of the dailies I was confronted by the full page advertisements sponsored by beverage giant ANSA Mc AL.
I said to myself, “Squaddy you deserve it”. The mere fact that you were nominated speaks volumes about how far you have come in the teaching profession.
My friend, though intellectually gifted, had his fair share of personal trouble and emotional trauma.
At university, the PPP as a party was at its most powerful. This was compounded by the meteoric rise of Bharrat Jagdeo from relative obscurity to the seat of power at New Garden Street.
My buddy got caught in the middle because then Ministers Henry Jeffrey, Shaik Baksh and his successor Priya Manichand refused to confirm his mother, Mrs. Genevieve Whyte- Nedd, as Chief Education Officer and as a result she lost out on her deserved pension.
A son enduring pressure based on pure vindictiveness politically experienced by his professional mother is not easy to remain focused. My friend you stood the test of time and are living proof that ” tough times don’t last, but tough men do”.
His singing prowess was no secret, so reading that he is using that skill as a teaching aid is no surprise.
Ossie, myself and all your colleagues are proud of you. Congratulations sir. Your hard work has been recognized and we are confident that you are nowhere near your true potential, so there will be many more accolades to come as you rise further in your chosen profession.
Congratulations sir.
`Sincerely Yours
Ronald Shepherd
