The most unifying force in the Caribbean is that game of glorious uncertainty called cricket.
Guyana was no exception. Whether it was Carl Hooper or Shiv Chanderpaul, we love and support our heroes when they performed well. Race and politics is always an issue when it comes to our beautiful game, cricket. Our passion for the game knows no boundaries or vicissitudes . what more can you ask for in social cohesion than for some of our heroes are participating to be paid for, to be shown on national television (NCN) for Guyanese of all walks of life to savour?
The Coalition, while instituting the Ministry of Social Cohesion, does not seem to have a clue what social cohesion entails, or maybe the Ministry of Social Cohesion was done solely for providing a source of patronage for some of its high end supporters.
The public clearly remembers that while the two main components of the Coalition, the APNU and the AFC were in opposition, they had voted in unison to cut the budget for NCN.
The PPP had found a way to have the most recognized series of the shortest of the game, the IPL, shown on NCN in all its years in office, for the entertainment of Guyanese of all walks of life, because they understand what is the greatest cohesive force in the fabric of Guyanese society. While the Government is known to follow in the footsteps of the PPP in ways that are seen to be negative, they have missed the boat on this one positive.
It is said that if you are going to copy something, be 100 percent good at it. The Coalition’s failure to purchase the rights for the showing of the IPL on NCN for 2018 is a blunder of leviathan proportions.
It is not too late. I am certain that the nation will be prepared to pardon the Government, if they could pay to have the remainder of the matches shown on NCN.
