Two men who are currently serving prison sentences were yesterday charged for defrauding persons by pretending to be First Lady Mrs. Sandra Granger.
Paul Anthony Lo Hing, 38, is serving 83 years for killing his girlfriend, Shoala Gilgeous, while 30-year-old Wazim Mohammed called ‘Junior’ is serving 10 years after he was found guilty of killing his one-time friend Russell Nelson.
The two men appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The first charge alleged that Lo Hing between April 1 and April 30, 2017 at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, with intent to defraud, obtained $30,000 from Beverly Harris, by falsely pretending that he was First Lady Sandra Granger, and he was in a position to grant her a scholarship, knowing same to be false.
It was further alleged that the two men between April 1 and April 30, 2017 at Mahdia, Region Eight, with intent to defraud, obtained from Beverly Harris the sum of $30,000 worth in mobile phone cards, by pretending that they were First Lady Sandra Granger, and that they were in a position to grant Harris a scholarship.
Both men denied the allegations after they were read to them by the Magistrate. They were instructed to return to court on May 4.
According to information, the two men over the past months have been calling persons pretending that they were the First Lady, duping the unsuspecting individuals out of money, using Mobile Money (Guyana). They reportedly were able to fleece victims of hundreds of
thousands of dollars in interior locations.
Last year, Mohamed Ali, who is serving an eight-year sentence, was also charged for defrauding persons by impersonating the First Lady. Ali, who is a prisoner at the New Amsterdam Prison, was slapped with three fraud-related charges after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Senior Magistrate, Leron Daly.
