On day blessed with brilliant sunshine, Essequibo were sent packing for a paltry 60 from 40 overs as the National U-17s brushed aside the team from Guyana’s largest County by 71 runs in the second round of the Hand-in-Hand 50-over U-19 tournament which was played at Everest yesterday.
Left-arm spinner Nigel Deodat followed-up his 15 in the U-17’s 131 from 47.4 overs, with a match winning spell of 4-17 from 10 frugal overs and got support from medium pacer Sheldon Charles (2-12).
Once Essequibo Vice-Captain Kurt Lovell (4) was bowled by Silvan Williams at 12-1 nobody else reached double figures expect number 10 left-hander batsman Bishram Mosses who was unbeaten on 12 from 56 balls and 37 minutes of batting in another game which saw woeful batting on display.
The U-17s are using this U-19 tournament as preparation for this year’s Regional U-17 competition in Trinidad in July and Coach Orin Bailey said he was pleased with the win but added there is a lot of work to which the shot selections of the batsmen in a tournament already littered with string of low scores.
The U-17’s were led by 63 with five fours and four sixes from batsman Narvan Persaud but only Windies U-16 Captain Sachin Singh (20) and Deodat (15) of the others got into double figures.
Reshan Mosses (3-12), Joel Fortune (2-26) and Sherland Anthony (2-37) were the wicket takers for Essequibo, yet to register a win since their opening game against Demerara was washed out at Bourda.
Inserted on a track with plenty of preparation moisture, Joshua Jones, the leading fast bowler in the three-day format, bowled Navindra Persaud (6) and the Nat -17s were 17-1.
Movindra Dindyal (1) was caught behind off Quinton Sampson at 26-2 before Mosses removed the MVP of the Inter-County U-17competion Seon Glasgow (1) and Andre Seepersaud for a duck as two wickets tumbled at 29 and when Singh was removed by Moses at 39-5 and Fortune jolted the stumps of Amir Singh before he had scored with the score 39-6, the Essequibians were sensing their first win.
However, Persaud and Deodat ensured that did not happen by taking the score 107 before Persaud was bowled by Anthony and Deodat was LBW to Fortune.
The National U-17 eventually got to 131 as they scored at just over two runs per over which was enough to give them their first win and a chance of meeting Berbice in the Final. (Sean Devers)
