For over thirty-five years, the work of Psalmist Eion Greaves, has impacted the local gospel music scene and touched the lives of listeners in Guyana, Barbados, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Curacao, Jamaica, Antigua, and the USA among other places.
On Saturday April 28, artistes and fans from all across Guyana will gather at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) to pay tribute to the man, whose music and ministry is said to have played an instrumental role in transforming gospel music, locally.
The singer, who gained popularity locally with hit tunes, “I Have a Plan” and “Restoration” is said to have paved the way for a new genre of music to local gospel arena.
Although he has been living in the USA since 1998, Greaves continues to contribute to the upliftment of local talents, particularly on the gospel frontier. The singer has visited Guyana on several occasions, working in the areas of music production.
His recent project is the formation of a band titled “The Synergistics”— which is a combination of singers and musicians from various ministries /churches.
Throughout his career, the distinguished artiste has been the recipient of a number of accolades–the most recent is the Gospel International Award during the nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary. This week‘s upcoming event is said to be another way of showing appreciation for Greaves’ dedication to music.
The “Eion Greaves Appreciation Concert” is a celebration of the musician’s pioneering and legacy.
Speaking to Kaieteur News about the upcoming event, Greaves noted that a group of his friends and supporters decided to hold the concert to pay tribute to his work in Ministry.
“This is just their way of saying, thank you. The concert is organised and sponsored by Royalty Empire, Den’s Trading, and the Hope is Rising Movement, among others.”
Greaves explained that the concert is setting a premise for things to come.
“This is the first appreciation concert of its kind and I am a forerunner… It certainly will not be the last show since we already have artistes lined up for next year’s event.”
According to Greaves, the night is expected to be one of elegance.
“We have a list of excellent singers lined up, Saiku Andrews will be there, Samuel Medas , Cherlyn Maloney, Mariam Corlette -Williams , Reverend Shawn Sobers among a number of other special guests and invitees. The show starts at 8:30 pm sharp and we are expecting a packed house.”
Tickets to the Eion Greaves Appreciation Concert are still on sale and are available at the Kester ‘D’ Music Shop on Charlotte Street and the National Cultural Centre.
