The medical term for nearsightedness is myopia. When you are myopic, you can see things close up (near) better that you can see things far away.
If you are myopic or nearsighted, the light focuses in front of the retina. This can happen if either the cornea ( the front surface) or lens has too much power, or if the eyeball is slightly shorter than normal.
WHAT DOES FARSIGHTED MEAN?
The medical term for farsightedness is hyperopia. When you are hyperopic, the light rays focus behind the retina. This can happen if either the cornea or lens has too little power, or if the eyeball is slightly longer than normal.
WILL WEARING GLASSES MAKE MY EYES BETTER?
No, glasses do not make your eyes better. Glasses just help you to see better. Some people mistakenly believe that wearing glasses will make their eyes improve, and they are surprised when they find out this is not the case. As you can see from the diagrams above, people who are nearsighted or farsighted don’t see clearly because the parts of the eye that focus the light don’t work as well as they should. Either the cornea is too steep or too flat, or the eyeball is too short or too long. Wearing corrective lenses just change the direction of the light and help you to see better. But the glasses cannot make the parts of the eye that aren’t shaped right change shape, so you will always need glasses to see better.
