An Amelia’s Ward Linden taxi driver, who on Tuesday slammed into a motorcyclist resulting in his death, is still in police custody. Residents are calling for the establishment of speed bumps at strategic points to deter drivers who are bent on speeding.
“We need to have speed bumps erected because some drivers don’t seem to care. They’re speeding and putting people’s lives at risk,” one man declared. Those sentiments were echoed by several others, who pointed out that the area where the accident occurred is “a blind turn.”
Thirty-seven-year old Florenda Benjamin, a former resident of Block 22 Wismar was pronounced dead on arrival at the Linden Hospital Complex, after the car HC 6299 which was driven by Michael Stewart of Amelia’s Ward, slammed into him, on Sir David Rose Avenue, in the vicinity of “Pitman turn” about 16:30 hrs on Tuesday.
Stewart, who was proceeding north, was in the process of overtaking another car when the accident occurred, according to police reports.
The impact flung the man from his motorcycle into the car’s windscreen, eyewitnesses said. The car received damages to the front left and a broken windscreen.
Benjamin sustained injuries to his head and a wound to the neck, which some eyewitnesses said was caused by the glass from the windscreen. He was rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
There persons who were travelling in the car were also injured. Leinani Ally, 31, of Cinderella City, Amelia’s Ward; Emily Ally, an 11-month-old of the same address, and 16-year-old Mary Fraser also of Amelia’s Ward.
Residents in the area and commuters are calling for speed bumps to be established in the area as this is the second accident to occur there.
Another accident also involving a motorcycle and a Tundra reportedly occurred in the same vicinity last week. Fortunately, there was no fatality.
Several fatal accidents in the mining Town over the years have involved motorcyclists, with most of them occurring on the main thoroughfare leading up to Amelia’s Ward.
