The 25-year-old hire car driver who claimed that he fell asleep on the wheel of his car and subsequently caused the death of a Crabwood Creek woman was yesterday remanded to prison.
Nilindra Premnauth, of Crabwood Creek appeared at the Number 51 Magistrate Court before Magistrate Charlyne Artiga. The charge stated that the accused on Monday, on the Number 58 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice drove motor vehicle HC 2217 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of Soorojnie Surjraj.
He was not required to plead. He was represented by Attorney-at-law Chandra Sohan who stood in for Attorney Mursalin Bacchus.
He is set to return to court on Friday.
On Monday, Premnauth was arrested after the vehicle in which he was transporting a family of three slammed into a parked lorry along the Number 58 Public Road just minutes after 7:00 am. The accident resulted in a fatality. The two other occupants sustained injuries about their bodies, the driver was unscathed
Dead is Soorojnie Surjraj, of Lot 13 Section A, Grant 1305 Crabwood Creek, Upper Corentyne, Berbice. Her daughter Bumika Sukhra and her mother, Raywattie Chanchal, also suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized after the accident.
An eyewitness told this publication that she was standing along the road when she noticed the car the heading eastward slowly. She saw the car “swoop in and hit the truck at the back. All me hear is boom and dem start scream in the car.”
She said that she immediately ran out together with other residents to assist. According to her, the driver of the vehicle told them that, “he feel sleepy and doze off. He seh he stop at Number 19 road and tell dem that he feel sleepy. He seh he wash he face and dem tell he fuh continue drive that it get li’l bit more to reach home.”
The dead woman’s brother, Vajendra Surjraj, 45, said he was sleeping when he received the call from his niece Bumika Sukhra stating that they were involved in an accident. He disclosed that his sister, mother and niece were returning home from the airport after dropping his younger sister off for her flight to New York.
He added that his mother was determined to go to the airport but he never expected such a tragedy. The sister is said to have taken the next flight back to Guyana.
