The Berbice Cricket Board as part of its commitment to play cricket in every Inter-Zone in the Ancient County, on Sunday last officially launched a “Say No to Drugs 40-Over Tournament for Teams in the Berbice River Cricket Association. The Tournament would feature five teams – Kimbia, Wiruni, Ebini, Sandhills and Friendship. The Tournament is being sponsored by a popular West Coast Berbice Businessman, while trophies were provided by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club’s ten Cricket Teams.
Berbice Cricket Board President Hilbert Foster hailed the tournament as a major milestone for Berbice Cricket as all five Sub-Associations are now actively involved in Berbice Cricket. At the completion of the 40-Over Tournament, a 20/20 version would be organised as the Berbice Cricket Board strives to make sure that players from the riverain area are involved in playing cricket on a yearlong basis.
Over the years, Foster stated the Berbice River area has been neglected but pledged that this situation would be corrected under his Presidency. The Berbice Cricket Board would also assist with balls, cricket gears when possible, and coaches, while Executives of the Board would also visit at least twice per year to meet with stakeholders and players.
Foster urged the five teams to play the tournament with passion, discipline, commitment and disclosed that the finals would be played on the Coast as part of an effort to promote the talent in the area. The finals would be played under lights at the Albion Cricket Ground and Foster disclosed that he would be approaching the Albion Lights Committee for permission to host matches from each of the five Sub-Associations. This, he stated is to not only promote the talents of clubs but to inspire them to greater success. Foster called on the Clubs in the riverain area to get themselves well organised for more competitions in the future and to be in the forefront of protecting youths from the evil ways of Satan. Cricket, he stated is one of the safest way to keep youths away from drugs and crime.
The passionate President stated that the development of the game across Berbice must be the number one goal of every Berbice Cricket Board Member and that the time for Cricket Politics is over.
